Why use a functional medicine approach?

  • Often we find that the causes of an illness can be seemingly unrelated issues. For example, chronic fatigue syndrome or joint pain may be caused by digestive issues or thyroid problems.
  • Functional medicine helps us piece together the puzzle and take a more integrated, holistic understanding. After using a systematic approach to assess your symptoms we create an individualised plan tailored specifically to your needs.

Nutritional treatment

Nutritional medicine employs various treatment methods to address health conditions through dietary and lifestyle modifications, supplementation, and specialized diets. These approaches aim to optimize nutrient intake, correct deficiencies, and manage or prevent diseases.
1. Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT):
MNT involves a personalized nutrition plan created by a registered dietitian or registered dietitian nutritionist.
It focuses on dietary changes, potentially including tube feeding or intravenous nutrient delivery, and may involve nutritional supplements.
MNT can address various conditions like diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, and weight management.
It also helps individuals overcome barriers to healthy eating and incorporate physical activity.
2. Dietary Modifications:
This includes adjusting eating patterns, such as reducing or eliminating specific foods or food groups, like in low-carbohydrate diets for diabetes or gluten-free diets for celiac disease.
Nutritional therapy can also involve eliminating “anti-nutrients” (processed foods) and focusing on whole foods, including raw vegetables and fruits, beans, legumes, and whole grains, according to some approaches from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Therapeutic systems like elimination diets and testing for “subclinical” nutritional deficiencies are also part of dietary modification.
3. Nutritional Supplements:
Nutritional supplements, including vitamins, minerals, and other plant or animal-derived products, can be used to address deficiencies or support specific health needs.
Examples include micronutrient supplementation for malnourished individuals or specific supplements for those with certain diseases.
4. Therapeutic Systems:
Elimination Diets:
These involve temporarily removing certain foods from the diet to identify potential triggers for symptoms and then gradually reintroducing them.
Naturopathy:
This approach utilizes dietary interventions alongside other practices like hydrotherapy and exercise to promote “nature cure”.
5. Engaging Patients:
Motivational interviewing and healthy conversation skills are used to encourage patient engagement and adherence to nutritional interventions.
This includes open-ended questions, goal setting, and providing support and education.
6. Addressing Malnutrition:
Treatment for malnutrition involves providing adequate nutrition through oral, enteral (tube feeding), or parenteral (intravenous) routes.
Nutritional support may also involve treatment for underlying medical conditions contributing to malnutrition.
7. Holistic Approaches:
Nurse practitioners often take a holistic approach to nutritional therapy, considering the whole person and their individual needs.
This approach integrates nutritional therapy with other aspects of health and wellness.
